My Hairstory

I’ve been receiving a few emails complimenting my hair and inquiring on what I do for maintenance, so I decided to give a little background first.  You see my hair and I have a very long and ever-changing history. So first I thank you ladies for the compliments and secondly for inspiring this post. Here is my hair history or what I like to call Hairstory for short. ;)

My First Hairstyle, the Hair I was Born With :)

I’ve had my hair natural, pressed, flat ironed, blow-dryed, relaxed, jheri curled, braided, weaved, dyed, hi-lighted, twisted, cut, trimmed, razor cut, straw set, roller set oh and don’t let me forget a wig or maybe two..lol.  Believe it or not I’ve done most, if not all of it myself.  When I was younger my mother used to take my sister and I once a week to get our hair pressed and curled,  and when we became teenagers we had to learn to fend for ourselves and we did.  Flourish actually, my sister was the queen of fake pony tails and I mastered the art of braiding and hair weaving. I was constantly messing with my hair.  My Granny (rest her soul) called me crazy for always doing something to it.  When I lived with her she would always come back in my room and see my hands in my hair and just shake her head and walk out.  When I didn’t live with her and talked with her on the phone she would always start out by asking, “how was my hair”.  More times than most I would tell her I was in the middle of braiding it or putting in a weave and she would just laugh. :)

The Big Chop (hubby wasn't to thrilled...lol)

I wish I could say like India Arie, “that I am not my hair” but unfortunately for me, I am.  When it looks good, I feel good.  When I was feeling stressed about something, braiding it for hours relaxed me and when I was going through some type of turmoil, I usually cut it for a fresh start.  Since I’ve gotten older and my life a little less stressed and more routine, I’ve been able to leave my hair alone, except for the regular every day styling. So my hair routine now is pretty simple.  I wash it once a week using Creme of Nature Shampoo.  I condition it with Pantene Relaxed to Natural Conditioner.  For daily maintenance I use Profectiv Break Free Daily Leave-in Strengthener.  I also use GNC hair, skin and nail vitamins.
