diy red and black stripe maxi dress

Hello Lovelies, I hope all is well. Today I am featuring my diy red and black stripe maxi dress.  As I’m sure you all know by now I love stripes and when I ran across this red and black stripe stretch knit at my local Yardage Town I acquired 3 yards knowing exactly what I wanted to make with it.  Last year I remembered seeing a similar style dress in white and navy stripe from J.Crew and I loved that dress but did not buy it as I knew it would not be long enough for me.  So when i spotted this fabric I immediately knew that this was what I wanted to make out of it and I am so pleased with how it turned out. The hardest thing about making this dress was trying to match up all of the stripes on both sides.  As you can see from the picture above I did a pretty decent job although not perfect as I started to get towards the bottom it went a tiny bit astray but I am confident that as I continue to work with stripes I will get the hang of it. As we are in winter I decided to pair my dress with chucks and a quilted vest for the layered look.  In the spring I will be pairing this dress with sandals.  diy red and black stripe maxi dress

Pattern Review McCall’s 6886

Pattern Description: Misses Dresses

Pattern Sizing: Cut size 16

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, easy to follow.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love that it was only three pieces for this top. Very easy to follow the instructions. Doesn’t require a lot of fabric. Easy to cut and sew right up.

Fabric Used: Red Cotton/Polyester Stretch blend acquired a few years ago from Fabric Mart in Hawaii.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I’m tall so I added several inches for a maxi length and also extended the sleeve length by a few inches as well to accommodate my long arms. I made side slits on both sides for ease of walking.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I will definitely be sewing this again!  I love maxi dresses and wear them all year long.  I definitely need this in a solid black and would like to make a white/navy stripe version as well.

Conclusion: I really love this pattern.  Would definitely recommend it to others.
