Ivory Maxi Dress – Butterick 6330 Review

Pretty Tall Style - Tall Women's Fashion and DIY Blog - Ivory Maxi Dress - Butterick 6330

Okay I’m a little giddy with excitement with this dress.  It’s simple, classic, elegant and quite an awesome feeling to know that I made it! All of my tall friends out there know how hard it is to find maxi dresses that are long enough for us and hit the right length.  It is even twice as hard when you are in need of a dress for a more dressier  occasion.  So to know that I now have one waiting in my arsenal that I made myself, makes for one very happy tall girl.

Pattern Review for Butterick 6330

Pattern Description: Misses Jacket, Dress and Jumpsuit, Lifestyle Wardrobe, Easy

Pattern Sizing: Xsm-Sml-Med, I cut a Medium.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? I did view C and yes for the most part it did.

Were the instructions easy to follow? It was so easy I did not need to use the instructions.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? How quick and super fast it was to sew. The style of the dress, that it is a maxi dress and has pockets.  I love that this pattern has options for a jumpsuit and jacket as well.

Fabric Used: Mid-weight ivory double knit purchased from Fabric- Mart in Hawaii.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The modifications that I made were eliminating the elasticized waist and instead of cutting the skirt and bodice as two separate pieces I pinned them to the fabric and spaced out the additional inches for length to accommodate my waist length and extra length for it to graze the ground on me with heels. I then cut it as one whole piece as opposed to the tow separate parts. I also made a really long belt from the fabric scraps about 2 inches wide.  I wrapped it around my waist twice bringing the ends to the front and criss-crossed them and tucked the ends neatly under. Thinking I can add a vintage broach to the center to secure it as well. I also just added a small slit in the back for the ease of walking since again I wanted my dress to graze the floor.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I will definitely be sewing this again.  I would definitely recommend this pattern to others.  Especially for beginners.

Conclusion: I am really pleased with how my dress turned out. Loving this pattern and definitely going to be making a couple of light weight casual versions to wear this summer.  Stay tuned for those coming to the blog soon.

DIY Red Shift Dress, Butterick 5211 #FBF

Pretty Tall Style - Tall Women's Fashion, Lifestyle and DIY Blog - DIY Red Shift Dress - Butterick 5211

In honor of Flashback Friday, I decided to bring it back to one of my all-time favorite DIY posts. This red shift dress I made using Butterick 5211 and a red woven fabric I had picked up from my then local Fabric Mart in Hawaii.

Pretty Tall Style - Tall Women's Fashion, Lifestyle and DIY Blog - DIY Red Shift Dress - Butterick 5211

I decided to go all out in monochromatic red today as I spotlight my diy red shift dress I made using Butterick 5211 view B, minus the belt.  Let me just say I love this dress pattern, it states fast and easy 1 hour pattern and it truly is very quick to sew. I definitely plan on making a few more versions in various colors, fabrics and prints, today I used a vibrant solid red woven fabric with a touch of lycra that I found at my local Fabric Mart.  It is a mid weight and structured fabric, but definitely not stiff and super easy to cut and sew.  I just love how it turned out, it’s loose but not boxy, simple, yet chic and modern and classic at the same time.  The pattern was very easy to use and the only modifications I made were adding extra inches for length to accommodate my height and lowering the pockets a bit, which I’m so happy I did, because my long arms hang down comfortably when my hands are in them.  I love dresses with pockets and I am not sure why I haven’t made more with them, but I certainly will be. I decided to pair my diy red shift dress with my laser cut open toe ankle booties by Christian Siriano for Payless, to add a bit of edge, making it date night appropriate.  I can also see it paired with some pumps and a blazer for a professional work or business meeting look. I also want to try dressing it down with sandals or maybe even a cardigan and a pair of chucks.  I will definitely be sewing this dress again in another vibrant color.

Orange and Light Blue

Pretty Tall Style - Tall Women's Fashion and DIY Blog - Color Crash Course - Orange and Light Blue

Hello Lovelies! I hope your week has been going well. Todays color pairing of orange and light blue was actually inspired by my earrings.  I picked these up last year from Wal-Mart of all places because I thought they were really pretty and loved the colors.

I made this orange maxi dress a couple of days ago and as I was pulling it out to wear I was about to grab my denim jacket but I wanted to punch it up a bit I was looking at my earrings and loved the light blue with the orange.  So I figured what the heck.  You all know this tall girl loves color and am not afraid to experiment with it.   I chose cognac wedge sandals and tote to help balance out the look. After looking at these pictures I have to say I think it works. What do you think.Pretty Tall Style - Tall Women's Fashion and DIY Blog - Color Crash Course - Orange and Light Blue

My orange maxi dress I made using New Look 6458 view A.  This is a super easy pattern to follow and a very quick sew. I added a few extra inches for length and apparently not enough as I normally like my maxi dresses to graze the ground, but I’m not disappointed in this dress.  I think it has just enough length to pair with my shoes that have ankle straps.  The fabric I used is an orange t-shirt knit that I’ve had in my fabric stash for a couple of years now.  It is from Fabric Mart when I was living in Hawaii.  It was the perfect weight for this pattern and style of dress.

Olive Duster

Pretty Tall Style - Tall Women's Fashion and Sewing Blog - Olive Duster

I’ve had this olive duster from ASOS tall for almost two years now and never wore it because I didn’t have the right “color” shoes to wear with it, and didn’t really know what to wear it with. I was very close so many times, of giving it away. But thanks to Pinterest I am so happy that I didn’t.  I finally found the right shoes from yet again my new find Eloquii! These cutout lace up booties are perfect and give me so many options with this duster.  So many color pairing options because of its neutral tone and several styling options thanks to these shoes.  I was inspired by this color combination thanks to this picture below I came across on Pinterest, showing different tones of olive and blush pink against the ivory wall. Pinterest is awesome for outfit inspiration and finding many different ways to wear items in your closet that you already own.  I can honestly say that if I had not come across this picture I would not have even thought about this pairing. I love the lines and that it is minimal, soft and really effortlessly put together.

Olive and Blush

So I pulled out my ivory saffiano leather dome satchel and diy blush pink midi tank dress. I made this dress a few weeks ago and it was a very easy 1 hour project.  I used McCall’s 6355 view B.  The only modification I made was to add about five more inches to the length to accommodate for my height and because I wanted it to hit below my knee instead of above. The fabric is a blush pink ribbed knit remnant that I picked up from my local Yardage Town Fabric store. It was only $2.98 a yard and the piece was just a little under 2 yards.
