Hi lovelies! I hope you all are having a fabulous weekend so far. Today’s blog post has a couple of DIY’s  going on.  As you can see I have a new hair style.  I decided to give Havana Marley Twists a try.  I’ll have an upcoming post with more information about this do’ for those of you interested, sometime in the upcoming week.  The second DIY is my black peplum top.  I used New Look 6130 and here is my review.

Pattern Description:
Sleeveless peplum top.

Pattern Sizing:
8-18, I cut a size 14. Since I’m a beginner sewer I’m not sure if the pattern runs big or if it was my error in not using the correct seam allowances,
because the top ended up coming out one size to big I think.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

I used the bodice from view C and the peplum from view B. So looking at these two I would say yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Yes the instructions were very easy to follow.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I disliked the armhole facing and the method for attaching it. I’m wishing it was curved instead of straight because I had a hard time getting it aligned with the armhole opening. But I will chalk it up to being a beginner.

Fabric Used:
Black polyester crepe purchased from my local Fabric Mart.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

I added 2″ to the bodice.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

I will definitely be sewing this pattern again. I will trying making it with sleeve and also with the asymmetrical peplum. I would recommend it to others.

Conclusion:
Not my favorite peplum pattern so far because of the problems I had with the armholes and sizing, but it is still a good one.  I will attempt to take this top in some, before wearing it again.  Hopefully it turns out okay.

Thank you for reading, have a blessed Sunday!

Hello everyone I hope you all had a great weekend.  I’m actually trying to get over a bad cold/flu that has has attacked my whole family since Wednesday. Have you ever spotted something that had a totally different purpose than what you had in mind for it?  Well this is what happened to me.  I was perusing the fabric department of my local island Wal-Mart and I came across this lovely bluish-purple, textured printed, awesomeness.   I had been wanting to make some “J. Crew inspired  cafe capris” and this fabric just seemed to hit the right note.  The fabric was sturdy and perfect for the structure I wanted for a matching jacket as well. I was surprised to see that it was less than $3.00 a yard and then I realized it was actually upholstery fabric, that could be used for re-upholstering an arm chair or making drapes.  So I am  literally wearing the drapes and it only cost me $12. ;)

On another note, I am still transitioning from my relaxer.  Its been six months now and I was very close to relaxing my hair this past weekend.  Managing the two textures is becoming quite frustrating and I really was at my breaking point.  I was ready to cut it all off or relax it.  The hubby doesn’t want me to cut it all at once. So I went to my local beauty supply store with the intentions of purchasing a relaxer and instead I bought hair..lol It’s an invisible part wig that I pushed back a little and put a head band on. I guess whatever helps me get to my end goal.  So for a while I’ll be trying different hairstyles as I try to make it to the end of the year, before my big chop. So for this week at least, I am team ‘big hair, don’t care’ and I kind of like it. :)

Thank you so much for reading!

Hello everyone!  I’m excited to be able to share another completed sewing project with you all.   I couldn’t wait to wear this polka dot peplum tee with my red skinny ankle length jeans. By throwing in my black wedges it gave my outfit  a fun and girly  look. I used Vogue pattern V8815 this time around.  The instructions were super easy to read and understand and I did make a modification. I was using a lightweight t-shirt material that had stretch, I knew I would not need a zipper to get the top on and off so I passed on the zipper and cut the back pattern out by placing it on the fold of the fabric to get one continuous piece instead of two. I only needed 1 yard of material, which I found at Wal-Mart for just under $6.

Now I know I always tell you guys that I am really excited about an outfit post when it features something I made, but I have to tell you that I am really, really excited about today’s outfit post. I absolutely adore the peplum trend, but haven’t had much luck with it myself.  The regular sized peplum tops I found that were reasonably priced, were way too short and small on me or the material used was too thin and when I ordered a “tall” size peplum top from topshop online, the flounce didn’t sit in the right spot on me. I thought this would be a trend that I would just have to let pass me by.  That is until I realized I had the  power to make my own. ;) So not only did I make the peplum top, I decided to make a matching pencil skirt  to pair with it as well.   I love how it looks like a dress when paired together, but I can still wear the top and skirt as separates as well.  The real kicker to this outfit is that it only cost me $14 to make.  I used 3 yards of a cotton stretch knit material I found at my trusty old friend, Wal-Mart. You may recall I made a maxi dress in a previous post out of this same material.  This top and skirt were so easy to make.  I didn’t even use a pattern for the skirt, I just used the left over material from my top, cut out a rectangular shape close to my size by eyeballing it and then added elastic to the top of it. The peplum top I made from Vogue pattern V1269 which is actually a pattern for a jacket and a dress, but I made a few tweaks to the jacket pattern, to make it into a shirt and it worked.
