DIY Envelope Clutch Tutorial

Hello lovely people.  Today I want to share with you a diy envelope clutch tutorial that I tried. As you all know I’ve recently taken up sewing and after sewing a maxi dress, and peplum t-shirt I decided to take on another favorite of mine.  The oversized envelope clutch.  I found an excellent video of a envelope clutch tutorial online here.  I followed most of her directions with a few adjustments of my own.  I was very pleased with my end result and wanted to share it with you all.  I have to admit that I was actually so excited with how it turned out that I will be making quite a few of these in different variations.  I realized I missed some steps in the photographs so I couldn’t give you a step by step.  When I have time I will post one but in the meantime here are some pics from start to finish so that you can kind of get an idea of how I did it.  If you’re interested in making your own I truly advise you to watch the video for the step by step instructions.  I was amazed at how easy it was.  :)

1/2 yard of vinyl material purchased from Wal-Mart and it only takes a 1/4 yard to make the clutch. So you can make two out of this material. One for yourself and one as a gift.:)
Poster board purchased from Wal-Mart only $0.34 a sheet. This is what you use to make your pattern.
Once you have all of your measurements marked and lines drawn you cut out the pattern.
Then you fold it so you can see what your clutch will look like.
Here I’m gluing the poster board pattern to crafting foam purchased at Wal-Mart for a little over $5.00 for 6.
Then I cut the foam following the poster board pattern.
Then you glue your vinyl to the other side of the poster board. Then I cut the vinyl leaving an extra 3/4 to an inch of the fabric around the pattern outline because I was sewing. When watching the video you will see she did a different measure for gluing.
Here I sewed down my edges 1/2″ in making sure all my corners were neatly tucked underneath.
here’s what the other side looks like. The white is foam as well. I had to use two pieces and the pack comes in multiple colors. The next clutches I make I will add a satin lining to gee it a cleaner look but no one sees this part anyway. :)
Here I put fabri-tac glue on the sides because they were too thick to sew using my machine (or a skill I have not learned how to do yet on my machine) :) after gluing together I used binder clips to hold them together for 4 hours to dry. It worked perfectly and didn’t leave any marks. You will see in the video she uses bobby pins at a certain point as well but I didn’t need to.
Here is the finished product. My clutch measures 14 inches wide and 8 3/4 inches in height. :)
