Hi lovelies! I hope you all are having a fabulous weekend so far. Today’s blog post has a couple of DIY’s going on. As you can see I have a new hair style. I decided to give Havana Marley Twists a try. I’ll have an upcoming post with more information about this do’ for those of you interested, sometime in the upcoming week. The second DIY is my black peplum top. I used New Look 6130 and below is my review of the pattern.
Pattern Review:
New Look 6130
Pattern Description:
Sleeveless peplum top.
Pattern Sizing:
8-18, I cut a size 14. Since I’m a beginner sewer I’m not sure if the pattern runs big or if it was my error in not using the correct seam allowances,
because the top ended up coming out one size to big I think.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
I used the bodice from view C and the peplum from view B. So looking at these two I would say yes.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes the instructions were very easy to follow.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I disliked the armhole facing and the method for attaching it. I’m wishing it was curved instead of straight because I had a hard time getting it aligned with the armhole opening. But I will chalk it up to being a beginner.
Fabric Used:
Black polyester crepe purchased from my local Fabric Mart.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I added 2″ to the bodice.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I will definitely be sewing this pattern again. I will trying making it with sleeve and also with the asymmetrical peplum. I would recommend it to others.
Conclusion:
Not my favorite peplum pattern so far because of the problems I had with the armholes and sizing, but it is still a good one. I will attempt to take this top in some, before wearing it again. Hopefully it turns out okay.
Thank you for reading, have a blessed Sunday!

Hello Tanasha
You did a great job for a beginner sewist and you look fabulous. I dont like armhole facings either, next time eliminate the facing and use bias binding around the armhole.
Hi Alethia, Thank you so much! I will definitely try that next time around. The facings were a pain and still didn’t turn out quite right…lol
Love the shoes and great job on the top!
Thank you so much Kelly!
Very original outfit! And those shoes… <3 <3
I'm traveling to Africa soon and I plan on having several peplum tops made (using African wax fabric) so I can rock them with jeans, too. I can't wait!
Thank you so much Alice! Oh wow Africa, how awesome! I can’t wait to see the pics. 🙂
You’ve inspired me! I bought this pattern and am getting ready to try it. So, I’m wondering, did you add 2″ to the bodice under the chest or did you add a little in the chest area, and a little below? Help, I haven’t sewed since jr. high. But, I’m so excited to give it another try.
Yay Krista! I hope it works out for you. I added 2 inches to the bodice under the chest. 🙂
The top looks great 🙂 As for the pattern coming out too big, it is very hit and miss to be honest. I’m currently making a new look top and I cut out my regular size and it was way too small! Other times I’ve cut out the next size up just to make sure and it has come out huge, you never know really.
Hi Zoe! Thank you so much. I’m glad to hear that it might not be my fault that it came out a it too big…lol I guess I can look at it as a way to get practice on making alterations. 🙂
